The Range Rover Velar is a luxurious large SUV. With a look that’s sleeker than other Range Rover models, the Velar has door handles that sit flush with the bodywork and pop out when the car is unlocked. The interior is just as stylish, with many of the functions controlled via a large touchscreen, just like a smartphone, so there aren’t many buttons.
The Range Rover Velar was introduced in 2017 and was updated in 2020 and 2023.
Your first decision is whether you want the standard version or the R-Dynamic model. There’s no difference in terms of performance, but the R-Dynamic is more sporty-looking. Then you have a choice of three trim levels: S, SE and HSE.
On top of the standard range there’s the high-performance SVAutobiography model, which is powered by a V8 engine, as well as the (even more) luxurious Velar Autobiography version.
The Velar was updated in 2020, with a plug-in hybrid option added to the range. Other changes included sharper graphics for the display screens and the ability to access most functions within two taps on the screen. Another update in 2023 included new front grille and bumper designs, and a curved infotainment screen.
Every Range Rover Velar has a touchscreen infotainment system included as standard. Pre-2023 models have a pair of 10-inch high-definition displays in the centre console, known as Touch Pro Duo, which are accompanied by dials to control the primary functions. From 2023, the two screens were replaced by a single 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen infotainment system, with the controls for the radio, seats and climate control moved to the side of the screen. All models also have a 12.3-inch digital driver display instead of a set of traditional dials.
Other features included as standard are dual-zone climate control, front and rear LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, sat nav, ambient lighting, an electric tailgate, leather upholstery, electric front seats, keyless entry and a rear camera. SE trim adds 20-inch alloy wheels, upgraded LED headlights with cornering function, and an upgraded 825-watt sound system. HSE adds even more equipment, while R-Dynamic gives each trim a sporty appearance, inside and out.
With a diesel engine, the Velar returns excellent fuel economy for a car of this size, especially the D180 model, which gives you up to 49.6mpg, according to official figures. While the D180, D240 and D275 diesel engines have been discontinued, the current D300 can give you 37.7mpg and the D350 36.9mpg. Petrol-powered models are less fuel-efficient, but costs should be reasonable for all but the high-performance SVAutobiography version. For the lowest running costs, check out the plug-in hybrid version called P400e. Introduced in 2023, it could give you more than 150mpg and an electric-only range of almost 40 miles, according to official figures.
The key rivals for the Range Rover Velar include mid-size premium SUVs such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Mercedes GLC and Volvo XC60. It also competes against SUV coupes like the BMW X4, Mercedes GLC Coupe and Porsche Macan. Among these, the Velar stands out for its roomy interior and genuine off-road ability.
Thanks to its large 632-litre boot, the Range Rover Velar is a very practical car, although the space drops to 552 litres if the car has an optional space-saver spare wheel. The location of the battery in the plug-in hybrid version means the luggage capacity shrinks to 503 litres, but this is still a lot of space.
It helps that the load area is almost perfectly square and almost a metre in length, so you have lots of room for holiday suitcases or a large dog (or two).
Land Rover divides its cars into three ranges: Defender, Discovery and Range Rover. The Velar is the second smallest Range Rover, sitting above the Evoque, but below the Range Rover Sport and the luxurious Range Rover.

The Range Rover Velar was awarded the maximum five stars by the independent safety organisation Euro NCAP in 2017. Standard safety features include six airbags, advanced emergency brake assist, rear Isofix points, plus front and rear parking sensors. Advanced driver-assistance systems include lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and cruise control with speed limiter, while high-spec models have a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and high-speed emergency braking.
The Velar plug-in hybrid, known as the P400e, was introduced in 2023. It combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a large electric motor. Land Rover added mild-hybrid technology to the Velar’s petrol and diesel engines in 2021, increasing both fuel economy and smoothness.
